Do we get enough information from Food Labels to make health decisions?
Yes, if you wish to avoid fats, sugars or salts, (more about Kilojoules and Proteins below).
But...is it useful?

Why? It would cost them money to put a few extra dots of black ink on the Label.
But the AFGA did think this a great idea, and introduced their own, self-rating 5 Star labelling system. Their products were splashed with multi-colour signage, costing 1000 x times more than any of the above any recommendations.
What a joke! For example, Nestle rated their Milo (mainly sugars) at 4.5 Stars. When questioned however would they do that? : "Well, Milo is always taken with milk, so we 'had to' include this (some 98% of the nutrients) into our self-assessment of the 4.5 Star rating!"
If you see a Milo tin now (2022, it its is splashed with all sorts of re-assuring health info, but no 4.5 Star rating!

But, if more convenient, you will know exactly what "Wellness Products" to buy to balance your Recommended Nutrient Intake (RNI, used to be RDI). See here for more info...
In 2009, Australian and New Zealand food regulation ministers agreed to a comprehensive independent review of food labelling law and policy. See here for details
An expert panel, chaired by Dr Neal Blewett, AC, undertook the review and the panel’s final report, Labelling Logic, was publicly released on 28 January 2011.
In December 2011, the Australia and New Zealand Ministerial Forum on Food Regulation (the Forum) agreed on a response to the recommendations contained in the review.
Of the 192 recommendations made by the Panel, only 1 was finally accepted. And only under pressure from the Health Authorities for a very 'bad and harmful' palm oil from a certain forests in Indonesia to be required on our Food labels.
Our Govt went on bended knees to the Australian Grocery Council , who refused as it would cost them money to put a few extra words in black ink on the Label.
